The Future of Film

What's next for film? We've seen many different mediums in which film has been produced under. From celluloid to technicolour to digital, the formatting of films has constanlt been changing. But what could be next? Can anything be next?

I'm not sure. In fact, I'm skeptical. I don't think anything will replace digital the way that it did to film. Our entire world has started to become digital. Most to all production companies have completely resorted to filming digitally, and hardly any exhibitioners practice anything besides digital exhibition. It just doesn't seem practical anymore with the problems that can occur.

At least, I don't think anything will be replacing the typical practice of digial filming we're already familiar with anytime soon. There are a great deal of different practices of filming that society has been introduced to as of late; 360 videos, virtual reality, they're all intriguing and interesting new ways to watch films- but there's no way they'll ever dominate. I truly believe that films are often watched as a means of relaxation, where the audience doesn't have to do anything to enjoy the content. Having to consistently engage in the viewing experience would be exhausting and tiresome for viewers. Watching a film would no longer become a leisure activity, but for some too complicated, and almost a chore.

All in all, I think there are a great deal of exciting new formats that films can be produced in, but viewers look forward to watching as an act of relaxation. Film viewing gives the audiences the opportunity to enjoy entertainment with minimal to no effort, and taking that away could defeat the entire basis of film-going.
